How Many Trees can You Cut Down?
One day, a chainsaw salesman called on a full-time lumberjack. Every day, this lumberjack would cut down 10 trees.
By hand, with an axe. Day in and day out – 10 trees.
The chainsaw salesmen made an offer the lumberjack couldn’t refuse: With a new chainsaw, he could cut down 10 times as many trees. At 100 trees a day, the lumberjack stood to make a lot more money.
So he bought the chainsaw. (In those days, there was no PayPal and there weren’t “3 Easy Payments” – he just paid cash.)
The next month, the chainsaw salesman stopped by to see how the lumberjack was getting along. Much to his surprise, the very large lumberjack was furious and wanted a refund.
“What’s the problem?” the salesman, a rather small, skinny man, asked.
“I paid all that money, and I can only cut down 4 or 5 trees a day with it! I can cut down twice as many trees with my worst axe!”
“That’s impossible,” said the salesman. “I could take down 50 trees a day, myself, with that model chainsaw.”
“Baloney!” said the veteran timberman. “Let me see you do one.”
“Fine,” said the salesman. “Give me that chainsaw!”
With that, the salesman grabbed the handle of the pull-starter and gave it a rip. The still new engine roared to life as he flexed his small arms and gave it some gas. VRRRrrrrroooooom, VRRRRoooooMMM!!
But before he even looked up to size up the tree, from the corner of his eye he saw that the lumberjack had jumped back about 10 feet in one split second. Over the roar of the motor, he hadn’t even heard the lumberjack shriek, “Aiyyyy!!”
But he did hear the lumberjack’s next question, “What in the HECK is that god awful NOISE?”
